Taking a Break from Perfection

Taking a Break from Perfection, Shapewear, Woman,

No matter where you look today, there will be something out there telling you that the person you are isn’t quite right. Whether it’s a friend commenting on your new haircut, an ad on the radio television trying to offer advice about your wardrobe choices, or a billboard in the middle of the city saying that your teeth aren’t wide enough, we have to listen to a million messages a day saying that something is wrong with the way we are. But if there is something wrong with what we are like now, then what should we be aspiring to be? Is there really someone out there with a flawless wardrobe, perfect hair, and sparkling white teeth? And when was it decided that that was the embodiment of perfection?

And that’s just it: there’s no one idea of perfection that can be decided on by any group, and why should there be? Human beings are as varied and as multifaceted as their ideas of perfection are, so it makes sense that we can’t find any common ground on what “perfect” should be. If there was, then surely someone would have come up with a way to make all of us as perfect as possible.

So, in this day and age, what does ‘perfect’ even mean? It’s a word that is thrown around a lot, and can certainly seem like a loaded word at time. Like the word ‘love,’ we seem to be using ‘perfect’ more and more. Whether it was the perfect meal or the perfect new dress, it seems that whilst our expectations of perfect in regards to our own appearance have increased, plenty of other things in the world can be deemed perfect at the drop of a hat. Enthusiasm about life certainly isn’t a bad thing, but when that sort of excitement stops us feeling good about our own skin, perfect starts to become a problem.

We want to shed this idea of “perfect” being what everyone has been telling us it is. If everyone was perfect, then wouldn’t life be boring? After all, what are we without our individualities, our eccentricities that make us all so unique? So, we’re taking a break from perfect, and making the time to redefine the word instead.

Do you want to know what we think perfect should be? We think perfect is about embracing who you are, flaws and all. We think perfect is loving yourself, inside and out, and being unashamed about who you are. Perfect is believing in yourself and having the confidence to be who you are without caring what others may think. To us, perfect is about taking charge of who you are and who you want to be, and not letting anyone else define you.

And we think that if everyone in the world did that, then maybe it would start to be, well, more of a perfect place to be.
